Ethiopian Christmas – Genna : January 6-7

9 Days

Overview

Ethiopian Christmas, known as Ganna or Genna, is celebrated on January 7th according to the Julian calendar, which is used by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. It is a major holiday in Ethiopia and is celebrated with great joy and religious fervor.

The celebration of Ganna usually begins the night before, with people attending church services that last throughout the night. The services include singing, prayers, and sermons. At dawn, people break their fast, which has lasted for 40 days, by eating a special bread called Dabo.

During the day, families gather to feast on traditional Ethiopian dishes such as injera (a sourdough flatbread) and wot (a stew made with meat or vegetables). Special drinks such as tej, a honey wine, and tella, a traditional beer, are also consumed.

In many parts of the country, the celebration also includes a traditional game called Ganna, which resembles field hockey. It is played with a curved stick and a wooden ball.

Ethiopian Christmas is a time of spiritual reflection, feasting, and spending time with family and friends.
