Ethiopian Epiphany – Timket: January 17-19

10 Days

Overview

Ethiopian Epiphany, also known as Timket, is a major religious holiday in Ethiopia that commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan by John the Baptist.

The celebration of Timket begins on the eve of the holiday with a procession, led by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church clergy, carrying replicas of the Ark of the Covenant, which is believed to hold the Ten Commandments. The procession is accompanied by traditional music and dancing, and the faithful carry lit candles and chant hymns.

On the day of Timket, the faithful gather around a body of water, such as a river or a pool, and the clergy bless the water. This is followed by a reenactment of the baptism of Jesus, where the clergy sprinkle water on the faithful, who immerse themselves in the water three times, symbolizing the Holy Trinity.

After the religious ceremonies, the celebration continues with feasting, singing, and dancing. Traditional dishes such as injera and wot are prepared, and special drinks such as tej and tella are consumed. The celebration can last for several days, with families and friends visiting each other to exchange greetings and gifts.

Timket is one of the most important and colorful religious festivals in Ethiopia, and is celebrated in many parts of the country with great enthusiasm and joy.
