Overview
The Simien Mountains in northern Ethiopia form one of the most dramatic landscapes in Africa, shaped by millions of years of erosion on the Ethiopian plateau. Jagged peaks, deep valleys, and sheer cliffs dropping up to 1,500 meters create a breathtaking panorama often called the “Roof of Africa,” with Ras Dashen standing as the country’s highest point at 4,550 meters. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its unique Afro-alpine scenery and as a haven for endemic wildlife, including troops of gelada baboons grazing on high plateaus, the rare walia ibex clinging to steep escarpments, and the endangered Ethiopian wolf.
