Simien Mountains and Northern History

Fly to Addis Ababa, where you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel. Spend the day exploring Ethiopia’s vibrant capital city, discovering its historic landmarks, bustling markets, and rich cultural heritage.

Visit Piazza, known for its Italian-era architecture, lively streets, and nearby attractions. Explore the Grand Anwar Mosque and Ragual Church, then experience the energy of Mercato, one of Africa’s largest open-air markets.

If time allows, visit the National Museum of Ethiopia to see Lucy, the famous 3.2-million-year-old fossil that transformed our understanding of human evolution. Continue to Holy Trinity Cathedral, renowned for its copper dome and distinctive architecture, and home to historic royal tombs.

In the evening, enjoy a traditional Ethiopian cultural dinner, an ideal introduction to local cuisine and culture while meeting your tour leaders.

Take a short flight to Lalibela, often known as the “New Jerusalem” and home to Ethiopia’s world-famous rock-hewn churches. Explore this remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site and discover the extraordinary history and architecture carved directly into the rock.

Visit Biete Medhane Alem (House of the Saviour of the World), one of Lalibela’s most impressive monolithic churches, before navigating the ancient trenches and pathways to Biete Ghiorgis (Church of St. George), the most famous and iconic of Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches.

In the evening, enjoy dinner at Ben Abeba, a unique restaurant known for its striking architecture, elevated terraces, panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, and excellent Ethiopian cuisine.

Take an internal flight to Gondar, the former imperial capital of Ethiopia and a city renowned for its castles, churches, and royal heritage.

Begin with a visit to Debre Berhan Selassie Church, famous for its colorful religious frescoes and distinctive traditional artwork. Continue to Fasil Gebbi, also known as the Royal Enclosure, founded in 1636 by Emperor Fasilides.

Explore this impressive historic complex, which covers more than 70,000 square meters and features royal palaces, libraries, royal baths, lion houses, and other historic structures. The architecture reflects a fascinating blend of Ethiopian, Aksumite, Indian, Portuguese, and Moorish influences, showcasing Gondar’s important role in Ethiopia’s history.

Overnight: Goha Hotel or similar

Depart Gondar by road for Debark, the headquarters of Simien Mountains National Park, often known as the “Roof of Africa.” Meet your trek leader and camp chef for a briefing before beginning your adventure into the Ethiopian Highlands.

Continue by 4x4 to Sankaber, with the final approximately 3-hour, 7 km hike providing an ideal opportunity to acclimatize to the altitude. Rising to around 3,200 meters above sea level, the route offers spectacular views across the dramatic Simien Mountains landscape.

On arrival at camp, enjoy drinks and snacks while the camp team prepares your evening meal. Camping equipment can be provided, and warm clothing is essential as nighttime temperatures can fall below freezing.

Route: Gondar – Debark – Sankaber (3,200 m)
Drive: 2–3 hours
Hike: Approximately 3 hours / 7 km

After breakfast, begin your first full day of hiking along the Simien Mountains ridge, enjoying spectacular views across the deep valleys and foothills far below. The route showcases the incredible biodiversity of the Ethiopian Highlands, with opportunities to spot Gelada monkeys, klipspringers, Walia ibex, and soaring birds of prey.

A major highlight is Genbar Falls, where you’ll admire a dramatic waterfall plunging approximately 500 meters into the valley below. After lunch, continue toward Geech, taking in panoramic mountain scenery along the way.

Arrive at camp surrounded by spectacular views and, if you’re lucky, watch Gelada monkeys moving across the steep mountain slopes before settling in for another night beneath the Simien skies.

Route: Sankaber (3,200 m) – Geech (3,600 m)
Hike: 7–8 hours / approximately 15 km

Set off early for Imet Gogo, one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Simien Mountains. From this dramatic headland, enjoy breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views across the surrounding mountains, deep gorges, and highland landscapes.

Return to Geech before descending through a scenic river valley toward the road, where a 4x4 vehicle will meet you in the early afternoon. Continue with a scenic drive of approximately 1.5 hours to Limalimo Lodge, one of Ethiopia’s renowned mountain lodges.

Relax after your trek with a hot shower, comfortable accommodation, delicious food, and spectacular views of the Simien Mountains.

Hike: 5–6 hours / approximately 13 km

Today marks the end of your Simien Mountains and Northern Ethiopia adventure. Depending on your international flight schedule, take the 1:10 PM or 4:15 PM flight back to Addis Ababa.

From Addis Ababa, connect with your onward international flight or, if your schedule requires, spend the night in the capital before continuing your journey home the following day.
